Safety support for Ethiopian rentals

Many rentals in Ethiopia rely on trust and quick visual checks. Our planned Safety service aims to make things more structured: simple checklists, clearer documentation and fewer surprises for both landlords and renters.

This service is not live yet. Ethiolet does not currently issue official safety certificates or engineering reports. The ideas below show the direction we are exploring.

Why safety support matters in Ethiopia

In Addis Ababa and other cities, tenants often worry about basics: wiring quality, gas cylinders, water pressure, damp, locks and building condition. Landlords may care about these too, but there is rarely a structured way to document what has been checked.

  • Renters want to know they are moving into a safe, cared-for home.
  • Landlords want to show they take safety seriously, without huge complexity.
  • Diaspora and overseas owners often lack visibility into on-the-ground condition.

A light, honest safety layer can improve trust on both sides, even before formal regulation or certification systems catch up.

Planned safety support flow

  1. 1

Guided safety checklist for the property

Ethiolet would provide a structured checklist for common Ethiopian rental issues: electrical points, gas setup (if used), water supply and leaks, doors and windows, stairs and balconies, basic fire safety and building access. Landlords or local caretakers could walk through this before listing or before move-in.

  2. 2

Capture photos and notes as a record

Instead of everything being verbal, the planned flow would let you attach simple photos and notes to each safety section (for example, "main breaker", "gas cylinder area", "balcony railing"). This creates a shared reference point if questions come up later.

  3. 3

    Highlight safety level and follow-ups

Based on the checklist, the system could highlight items that look good, items to monitor, and items that ideally need attention before move-in. Over time, this could feed into trust signals on the listing (for example, "Basic safety checklist completed"), without pretending to be a full engineering inspection.

What this service aims to be

  • A practical safety checklist tuned for Ethiopian rentals.
  • A simple way to document condition at or before move-in, with photos and notes.
  • Extra reassurance for renters, diaspora owners and expats without heavy process.

What it will not be

  • It is not a substitute for professional engineering, electrical or structural inspections.
  • It will not guarantee that a property is free from all risk.
  • It does not replace legal requirements that may apply in certain buildings or contexts.

Pricing and availability

Safety support is planned as an optional paid add-on or bundle that can be combined with services like Full Tenancy Creation or Tenant Referencing for landlords who want a more structured approach.

We're still exploring how to balance checklists, photos and professional input in a way that makes sense for Ethiopian buildings. Until then, the service remains "coming soon" and there are no fees.

You can still make your listing stand out today

Even before this launches, clear photos and honest descriptions of your property's condition go a long way. Ethiolet gives you the space to show that.
